What Trane Technologies plc's (NYSE:TT) 29% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Simply Wall St·05/20/2025 10:02:41
Listen to the news

Trane Technologies plc (NYSE:TT) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 30%.

Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 18x, you may consider Trane Technologies as a stock to avoid entirely with its 34.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Recent times have been advantageous for Trane Technologies as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Trane Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 28% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 99% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 9.6% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth per year, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Trane Technologies is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Trane Technologies' P/E

Shares in Trane Technologies have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Trane Technologies currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
